The IFWG Fintech Data Portal is an online interactive resource that allows users to contribute, update and interact with a visual representation of the fintechs operating inside and outside of the South Africa landscape. The objective of the IFWG Fintech Data Portal is to offer regulators, policymakers, industry, and investors an up-to-date coherent fintech database for South Africa. The aims to become a collaborative platform whereby users and industry participants can actively review, update, and share data. It has been developed to systematically identify, classify and visualize fintech entities.

Although definitions of Fintech differ, the working definition of Fintech to be applied in the Fintech Data Portal is mainly adapted from the 2019 Report on Fintech Scoping in South Africa; The definition refers to "advanced technology firms that have the potential to transform the provision of financial services spurring the development of new business models, applications, and whose products and services are directly applicable in the delivery of financial services. It includes a wide range of technical innovations that attempt to improve the efficiency, accessibility, and convenience of financial transactions, investments, and risk management.

Primarily, interest of the Web Portal is to identify Fintechs that emerged outside the traditional financial system using technology as the underpinning solution. However, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) will be included, and Banks will be excluded.

The fintech entities included in the Data Portal should have been in operation for at least one year and must show a solid digital presence. Fintech that are not operational (inactive) are also included in the Data Portal.
